OUR
IMPACT

Every year in the UK it is estimated that at least 25 million GP appointments and 5 million A&E visits are used for self-treatable illnesses which could otherwise have been self-treated using OTC medicines (1).

Maxwellia is dedicated to bringing prescription medicines to life as new  over-the-counter (OTC) brands, designed to change the way the people look after their health now, and for the future.

We empower consumers

We’re putting the power of healthcare back into people’s hands. Treating certain conditions can be as simple as a trip to the pharmacy—no doctor’s appointment or prescription required. Our brands are not only convenient to access, but they also come with advice from trained pharmacists or online brand information hubs, providing trusted information and making self-care smarter and more accessible than ever.

We champion pharmacists

Pharmacists are at the heart of healthcare, and OTC medicines can unlock their full potential, making their work more impactful and rewarding. With 90% of pharmacy income in the UK tied to NHS funding (2)—a model under increasing strain—embracing OTC options offers pharmacists a chance to diversify income and build a more sustainable future.

OTC medicines also reduce pharmacists’ administrative load. By investing in pharmacy training and delivering intuitive pack designs, we help to free pharmacists and counter assistants from lengthy consultations, enabling them to deliver fast, effective solutions and positioning them as the first point of trusted care with patients.

We save money for the NHS

OTC medicines already save the NHS £6.4bn in avoided prescription and appointment costs.
With wider use of OTC medicines for the self-care, the NHS could save a further £1.7bn per year in appointment costs alone (1).

We support the wider economy

The use of OTC products already avoids approximately 164 million lost workdays per year, which equates to £18bn saved in avoided lost wages every year (1).

By eliminating unnecessary GP and hospital appointments with wider use of OTC medicines, the economy could see savings of an additional £350m as employees would not need to take time out from work (1).

We’re working across a wide range of conditions to bring breakthrough products into the hands of consumers by making them convenient and easy to access in their local pharmacy – watch this space!
